Maruti Swift (2018-2024) Review: K12 Engine Secrets & Pros/Cons

Maruti Swift (2018 - 2024)

The Definitive CarPrex Ownership & Technical Review

The 3rd Generation Swift (codenamed A2L) remains a favorite in the Indian used car market. While it transitioned to the Heartect platform for better agility, it brought a set of technical nuances that every enthusiast must know before signing the check.

What we Like

  • K12M Engine: One of the best 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engines in the world.
  • Handling: Tight chassis tuning makes it a joy in the corners.
  • Resale Value: Holds price better than almost any hatchback in Gujarat.
  • After-sales: Maruti's service network is unparalleled in rural areas.

What we Don't

  • Build Quality: Lightweight panels are prone to easy dents.
  • Safety Rating: Poor Global NCAP scores compared to Tata/Mahindra.
  • AMT Logic: The automated manual transmission can be "jerky" in stop-go traffic.
  • NVH Levels: Road and tyre noise creep into the cabin at 100+ km/h.

Technical Deep-Dive: K-Series Secrets

To truly understand the Swift, you must understand the K12M engine. Most reviewers focus on the 0-100 km/h time, but here is what’s happening under the hood.

1. The Offset Crankshaft Design

Did you know the K-Series crankshaft is slightly offset from the cylinder center? This reduces the side-thrust exerted by the piston against the cylinder wall during the power stroke.

The Result: Lower friction, increased fuel efficiency, and an engine that can easily cross 200,000 km if fed with the right grade of synthetic oil.

2. Plastic Intake Manifolds

Unlike the older G-Series which used heavy metal manifolds, the K-Series uses a high-grade Plastic Intake Manifold.

The Fact: Plastic is smoother than cast metal, reducing "pumping losses" and allowing air to flow into the cylinders with less turbulence. It also keeps the intake air cooler since plastic doesn't heat up as fast as aluminium.

3. The Silent Timing Chain

Gone are the days of the G-Series timing belts snapping. The K-Series uses a link-plate silent chain.

CarPrex Insight: While the chain is "for life," the Hydraulic Tensioner depends on oil pressure. Using poor quality or thick oil will cause the tensioner to fail, leading to that famous "engine rattling" sound on cold starts.

Essential Service Intervals (Used Swift)

Component Frequency Recommendation
Engine Oil 10,000 km Use 0W-20 or 5W-30 Synthetic
Spark Plugs 40,000 km Check for carbon fouling yearly
Coolant 2 Years Use Maruti Genuine Coolant (Green)
